The Boa Vista O Mundo Foundation is a provisionally small-scale project that provides adequate educational opportunities on the island of Boa Vista.
Geert Strobbe, founder and driving force of this non-profit organization, visited the country for the first time in 2008, during a family holiday. Aside from the beautiful beaches and extensive vegetation, they also acquainted themselves with the seamy side of the country, the slums Baracca near the capital Sal Rei.
The appalling living conditions greatly overwhelmed the family. Especially the children were impressed by the vicious circle of poverty that had affected these people. The Strobbe family decided to take action and started with the financial support of the family of Chico & Eve, who live in the Baracca with their four children.
Just a drop in the ocean, because they could not give all 300 families from the Baracca a better life...
But Geert’s enthusiasm was contagious. Students at the Lessius Mechelen University College were impressed by the story of their professor and wanted to take action. And so the assistance accelerated. To Geert Strobbe’s great pleasure, the students rolled up their sleeves and did a lot of work themselves: sponsors were sought, events were organized, and even a documentary was shot on site ... Some students decided to dedicate their final paper to the great project that Geert had started a while back.
What began as a holiday trip has now become a real non-profit organization, with a broad base in terms of assistance. Because of the function that Geert has as a professor and the good teamwork with the students, it is obvious that projects related to education and schooling are close to our hearts.
What this quote proves is that education is the only guarantee of a better life for the residents of the Baracca.
The BVOMF is currently already getting financial resources due to organizations such as "Wheels on tour" (www.wheelsontour.com) and logistical and political support due to the "Turtle Foundation" (www.turtle-foundation.org).
But this is not enough! Your support, large or small, can make a world of difference; the children’s smiles in return for your help will be forever remembered by the inhabitants of Cabo Verde, Boa Vista. We also guarantee that every euro that our association receives will be used to give the people of Boa Vista a better life. This non-profit organization gave the Baracca's a new name: "Boa Esperança" or Neighbourhood of good hope! You can help us in making this promise of hope come true!
